Destination UK – Documentary series proposal

D:UK – Destination UK – was a proposal for a documentary series tracing the various aspects of Portuguese emigration into the UK and London specifically.

Extract:

The Portuguese community has changed and is more diverse today. There are those who have been here for over 20 years but have little command of the English language, as well as a growing number of a younger generation that comes to academic studies. Perceptions are radically different, as well as social activity and cultural interests – taking advantage (or not) of the vast cultural offer, or isolation within the community, or the participation of the two.

Particularly interesting is the second generation and in these the difference of attitudes between sexes: boys tend to keep inherited cultural codes, while girls clearly manifest a will to absorb more of what surrounds them – emancipation in process.

This series of documentaries intends to portray the diversity that exists, revealing the similarities and differences of life in London. What can we learn from experience? to what extent is there continuity or change of objectives? Is life beyond borders easier? Worth it? How is our identity strengthened or challenged?

Style examples

Ex1: End of a party in St. John Woods. Early morning city image … the music is still playing. Cut to phone ringing (CU phone). Music from the previous scene is still present. Hand picks up the phone. Cut to the new character. Music cuts off. Camera reveals a new scene, a new character.

Ex2: Lady at the end of workday talks about her social maladjustment in London. Static camera. She does not speak English. She’s alone. Silence. There’s a sound coming up in the background. It’s noisy first, punk music later. Cut to the Parkinson’s giving a concert. They are naked. It’s pandemonium.
