Got into Documentary film after frustration with Photography settled in. In essence, Documentary film could not become a fetish (in the way that Photography can become), but rather that it was based around an argument, and has to be watched in order to agree/disagree with.
It also coincided with a personal need for theoretical study and so I applied and attended the Contemporary Media Practice degree course at Westminster University. Besides its political outlook, the course also allowed students to work in whatever media we thought fit.
My final project was a one-hour documentary made with scarce resources and mostly done on my own. It used heroin addiction as a metaphor to address a changing cultural and economic context in Portugal. Despite the many obstacles, the documentary was awarded an Honourable Mention at the Malaposta Documentary Film Festival (currently DocsLisbon), by an international jury.
In this portfolio, you’ll find other documentaries as well as proposals.
I very much enjoy all facets of Documentary making, from research to filming, interviewing and editing.
It’s also the case that my other work has more often than not, a reference to reality. By this I mean, using images that depict a real situation, where the real world is shown. Even in Visuals (VJ), I had about 40% of images that were about the real world around us, from nature to news items and social issues.
