It's complicated...

A selection of documentary images produced up to 1992.
The images in this portfolio include travellers and squatters, mostly in London in the early nineties.

This was a time when underground lifestyles were in full force. Social tensions and the new economic ethos certainly drove people into seeking alternative ways of living and being. With a thriving cultural and oppositional scene, the underground network was different, seducing, and all-encompassing.

One of the manifestations of this period was the Mutoid Waste Company, who many people identified themselves with. The Mutoids eventually left Britain after much harassment and left to Europe, where they were made to feel more welcome. I caught up with them in Berlin in 92, where I filmed as well as taking photographs, some of which you can find here.
